Hi, my name is Gemma Venn (Tutoring) and I have been teaching pupils for over 24 years, in traditional schools and through face to face and online remote tutoring.
I am a primary trained specialist maths, English, science, phonics and SATs teacher who has taught all subjects throughout the primary phase. My methods are interactive and involve traditional pen and paper tasks as well as online games and activities.
My lessons start with an initial assessment and then I discuss and devise a bespoke learning plan, tailored to the child’s needs, with the parent/guardian. This is also an opportunity to share any specific learning needs your child may have. Ideally, it is useful to share a recent school report (if available) along with any specific targets/levels which have been set. Whilst I will also carry out my own assessments, this is valuable information which can help inform our bespoke plan so we can hit the ground running.
I have vast experience teaching pupils with a range of needs including (but not limited to) neurodiversity, EAL, ADHD, hearing and visual impairments as well as those with SEMH related anxieties and pupils who have dyslexia, dyscalculia or processing difficulties.
I prioritise building a relationship with your child as it is crucial to understand their needs, likes, dislikes etc; am well-organised, professional, honest and reliable.

If you are wondering whether or not to start tutoring, my honest advice would be to get started sooner than later. Many parents leave it until a few weeks before eg SATs, and whilst I would still support this, it is far more beneficial to build up gradually eg. a year or more beforehand. The phrase “keep up, not catch up” summarises this theory.
NB. I currently offer ONLINE REMOTE teaching/tutoring only. Whilst I advertise for KS1/2 pupils, I am also happy to teach older pupils who are working at KS1/2 standard.
Online versus Face-to-Face Tuition
Many parents believe that face-to-face tuition is more effective than online. I expected that to be the case too, but I was wrong. Over the years, I have developed online tutoring and use cutting edge technology. I have tutored both in person and also online, and to my surprise, my online tuition loses none of the benefits of tutoring in person and only adds additional benefits.
*First and foremost, technology is here to stay and our children thrive with interaction, love being online and can be more motivated to have a tutor online than in person as it feels like less effort to them – it doesn’t feel like learning.
*The pupil is able to see the question or diagram that is on my screen, and we can both write accurately on the whiteboard/paper/graph.
*I can prompt the pupil on screen as to what we should do next.
*Parents do not need to travel to my house and wait for an hour (or go home and come back to collect later).
*I don’t need to travel to various locations, losing teaching time when travelling.
*Pupils may be anxious about leaving home, or have physical difficulties making leaving home tricky; they can access the learning from the comfort of their home. As can I.
Online tutoring wins in every way.

At the time of writing, I have availability during the daytime on Tuesdays and Thursdays for any Home Ed pupils, plus limited after school slots on a Tuesday to Thursday, inclusive. Additionally, I offer holiday sessions open to term-time pupils and those wishing to have ad-hoc boosts to keep up when they have increased availability.
