Product Description
German Military Underground Hospital was constructed by slave labourers during the German occupation and is the largest remaining structure from that time. It is almost invisible from the surface, so you will all be amazed at the size this underground tunnel complex that was hewn out of solid rock and covers 7,000 square metres (over 75347 square feet)! The hospital was never finished, but still has a forbidding atmosphere and gives you an idea of the grim conditions that the slave workers lived in. There are 2 main corridors with operating theatre, wards, laboratory, X Ray room, dispensary, and staff quarters connected to both. The hospital and Ammunition Store are almost empty now, but there are still signs of their previous uses, such as hospital beds, most of the kitchen, and central heating plant remains, pretty creepy! As you travel through the tunnels, you will see electricity junction boxes and air conditioning fans, plus a number of signs throughout in German, including ‘Rauchen Verboten’ (Smoking Prohibited), ‘Entrinnen Schaft’ (Escape Shaft), and ‘Unbefugten Eintritt Verboten’ (Unauthorised Entry Prohibited)! On a slightly lighter note, the owner Joyce Browning is there every day (except when there have been important events like weddings!), and loves talking to visitors, who often have their own stories and memories to share. Probably one for the slightly older kids, but an interesting day and thought provoking day out.
